Donghua University in Shanghai is working to establish the country's first fashion journalism and mass communications major.

The first batch of undergraduate students will begin the program this fall, according to the university, which has historically been a training ground for the arts and fashion design.

"Shanghai is the fashion mecca of China, but the city doesn't have enough fashion communication professionals. US fashion icon Anna Wintour is one such example," said Wang Meifang, a professor at the university.

Wang said it's important to cultivate more fashion media talent who not only have knowledge of the fashion industry but also experience in media.

"Fashion media talent should observe the latest trend of the fashion industry, have aesthetic judgment and knowledge of fashion design and manufacturing. Besides, they should also have solid communication skills. This is the focus of our talents cultivation," Wang said at a recent international forum on fashion communication and social development in Shanghai.

The university has established a fashion communication research center, which has integrated various disciplines, such as management, the arts, design, journalism and communications.
