Prof. João Rodrigues is the Director of CQM-Centro de Química da Madeira/Madeira Chemistry Research Centre (National Research Laboratory FCT –UID674), University of Madeira, Madeira Island, Portugal, since 2006. He received his Ph.D. degree (1999) in Chemistry/Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Lisbon (Portugal). At University of Madeira is the main responsible for the areas of inorganic and organometallic chemistry, nanochemistry, and nanomaterials. Since 2013, he belongs to the General Council of the University of Madeira.

Presently, he belongs to the ACS Insight Lab from American Chemical Society, to the Board charged of the roadmap of Health and Wellness in the framework of “Horizon 2020” (Madeira 14-20) at Madeira Island (Portugal) and to the Portuguese advisory board of the One Belt One Road initiative. He is/was the principal investigator/member of several national and international research projects and scientific networks. The total budget managed as Principal Investigator represents more than 4 million of euros. He has authored 60 peer-reviewed articles in high impact journals (h index= 20, i10 index = 30), 3 book chapters, and 14 proceeding papers. He presented more than 29 invited talks and 73 other oral presentations in international conferences, research institutions, and universities worldwide.


Due to their unique structure, well defined molecular weight and multivalency, dendrimers present an important potential for application in the biomedical field, such as in drug/gene delivery, tissue regeneration and diagnosis.

In this work, poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers of different generations (G3, G4, and G5) treated with ammonium persulfate(APS) were evaluated in liquid and solid state regarding their absorbance and photoluminescence properties. Furthermore, cytotoxicity and cellular uptake studies were performed using a metabolic activity assay and fluorescence microscopy, respectively.
