THE city is in stitches as tailors will no longer need to measure their customers by hand to guarantee a good fit.

Researchers at Donghua University have invented a "mock dressing system" that is able to measure one's figure in a minute and formulate a preview on computers, school officials said yesterday.

With two digital cameras connected to a special computer program, people who want tailor-made clothes just need to stand in front of the lens and have two digital photos taken.

The computer will analyze the photo from different angles, compose a three-dimensional profile and record the person's measurements - such as one's height, bust, waist and hip size - within several minutes.

Customers then will be allowed to pick a clothing design on the computer. The program then provides a simulated picture about how the dress or suit will look and whether it fits properly.

"The system is expected to knock out the traditional working methods of tailors," said Yu Jianyong, deputy director of Donghua's modern textile research institute.

With people having more disposable income than ever before, a growing number want tailor-made clothes.

Still, traditional methods take time and customers usually have no idea how the clothes will look once completed, Yu said.

Donghua once developed a three-dimensional figure scanner about five years ago. But the machine costs more than one million yuan (US$133,333), so it is now used for professional model selection, rather than ordinary tailor use.

University officials said they were teaming up with garment companies to prepare a "mock dressing" workshop for the public. But the details and price have not been determined.
