主讲人简介:Dr. Hao Li received his B.E. and M.E. degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology (New Jersey) in 2003. Upon graduation, he joined Brown University, as a postdoctoral research associate. In 2005, Dr. Li joined University of Missouri at Columbia (MU) as an assistant professor in the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering department and he also holds a joint position in the Biological Engineering department. In 2010, Dr. Li earned his tenure and received the promotion to Professor in 2015. Dr. Li’s current research focuses on synthesis, characterization, and application of novel nanostructured materials and biomedical materials with advanced properties. The medical applications being explored in Dr. Li’s lab includes dentistry, orthopedics, cardiovascular, and diagnostics. Dr. Li received NSF Career Award in 2009. Dr. Li is also an entrepreneur, as a co-founder of Nanova Inc. Until now, two products from Nanova Inc have been cleared by FDA, and several products are under FDA review.


内容摘要:Currently there are primarily two types of filling materials for direct dental restoration: amalgam (silver color) and dental composites (tooth color). Although dental composites is getting more and more popular because they look better and do not contain mercury, but the life span of composites based posterior restoration may only last 6-8 years, compared to typical life span of amalgam based restoration, 13-20 years. Because of short life span composite restoration, it is estimated that replacement fillings comprise 75 percent of a dentist’s work. A study has showed that 70% of the composite restoration failed at interface while 30% failed due to composite fracture. National institute of Health (NIH) has indicated the short life span of composite as the most critical challenges for restorative dentistry and has also invested tens of millions dollars in order to understand and solve the problem. Nanova, in collaboration with University of Missouri, has been dedicated in developing viable technology based solutions with the aim to improve the life span of composite restoration. In order to address the inadequate bonding, we have developed a medical device, named plasma brush, which can significantly improve the composite tooth bonding strength. In order to address the need of stronger composites, we have applied nanomaterials to significantly improve the mechanical properties of a dental composite. Currently, we have demonstrated dental composites that are stronger than any other dental composite in use.
