Climatepressures on multinational corporations are reshaping the dynamics betweencustomers and suppliers. As firms respond to these pressures by promotingsustainable practices, they may transfer environmental responsibilities totheir suppliers. Drawing on the decoupling perspective, we posit that whilesuppliers adopt sustainability practices to satisfy customer climate pressuresand project an environmentally responsible image, these actions often lacksubstantial commitment to meaningful change. We utilize Compustat customer datato match North American suppliers with their global customers and explore theinfluence of climate pressure. Study 1 and Study 2 collectively reveal a dualeffect of customer climate exposure on suppliers. We contribute to theliterature by highlighting the complexities underlying climate-relatedpressures in supply chains and extend understanding of the unintendedconsequences of environmental pressures.
